DNA Sequencing Overview

DNA structure people

DNA sequencing is the process of determining the sequence of nucleotides in a section of DNA. The first commercialized method of DNA sequencing was Sanger sequencing. Sanger sequencing was the primary method utilized in the Human Genome Project from 1991 to 2003 when the first draft of the human genome was published. Sanger sequencing is still commonly used for low throughput DNA sequencing applications. However, newer methods of DNA sequencing are rapidly being introduced for much higher throughput applications.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS), also known as high-throughput sequencing, is the catch-all term used to describe a number of different modern sequencing technologies. These technologies allow for sequencing of DNA and RNA much more quickly and cheaply than the previously used Sanger sequencing, and as such, revolutionized the study of genomics and molecular biology.
